Enabling the Entrepreneurial Mindset: Step 5 – Prioritizing Continuous Learning

Entrepreneurs are people who have the vision to identify and capitalize on risky and new business opportunities. These skills are not necessarily something the individual is born with, but a conviction and willingness to seek out and exploit innovative ideas. Step 1 unleashes the mind to develop, create experiments in the mind, and generate potential opportunities. Step 2 emphasizes how a resilient mindset eschews setbacks and uses them as a learning experience. Step 3 points out the need for a highly tuned financial acumen and the ability to understand, interpret, and project a sound end-to-end approach that maximizes profitability while managing the necessary cash flow and investing in the future. Step 4 focuses on building and nurturing long-term, meaningful relationships. Yet another crucial step to enhancing the entrepreneurial mindset is the art of remaining relevant to the area of interest through a relentless pursuit of maintaining an inquisitive mind through continuous learning.

Self-motivation is a critical factor in establishing a pathway to continuous learning. Setting personal goals allows the entrepreneur to identify milestones and accomplishments necessary to expand knowledge in a structured and measurable fashion. Breaking down larger learning objectives into manageable activities also allows a clear and objective plan to follow.

Allocating dedicated time to learning is imperative. Setting aside time each day to learn helps to create the discipline and rigor necessary to maintain a habit of continuous learning. Learning daily is essential, and blocking one's calendar each day is imperative. Also, Cell phones and access to other distractions are stowed away until after the learning session.

The learning process itself should leverage an active learning model. Taking notes, building on past learnings, asking questions, and, where plausible, participating directly in discussions can help enhance the experience. Learning should also come from diverse sources such as readings, lectures, and any other means to help facilitate a holistic experience. The approach should stir the individual's curiosity to discover more topics and encourage further exploration of the area of interest.

An integral part of learning is applying critical thinking skills in the process. Critical thinking allows the person to analyze the information through informed decision-making and examine and question assumptions regarding the material under observation. Drawing logical conclusions based on known information or making inferences helps the learner establish a baseline of understanding and recognize the limitations of the outcomes, which helps facilitate open-mindedness and the consideration of alternate viewpoints.

Enabling and the willingness to adapt innovative ideas, technologies, and methodologies to reason is conducive to the overall experience. Embracing different points of view and recognizing current ideas is critical to the learning journey. Finding comfort in a disruptive environment wrought with innovative and unconventional outcomes allows the learner to remain flexible and embrace diverse principles and ideas as they emerge over time.

Establishing a support network of like-minded people committed to learning helps enhance the ongoing learning journey. Joining online forums, seeking out learning communities, and attending workshops and conferences can shed new perspectives and thoughts for future learning. Celebrating and building healthy and meaningful relationships with like-minded people can also encourage growth and meaning to existing ideas or the occasional impasse in thoughts.

Continuous learning opens the path for resourcefulness and objective problem-solving. The approach helps to identify and obtain access to materials and information to help encourage personal and professional growth. Identifying learning resources such as the internet, books, articles, online and in-person courses, and even seeking subject matter experts in the field must adhere to a disciplined and curated self-directed learning program. The commitment is time on behalf of the learner and a willingness to commit effort daily to embrace learning skills to enhance personal and professional growth.
